From what I understand, most kickboxers practice on bare foot so it is strange to see people looking for the best shoe for kickboxing. After asking around and talking to folks, I can now understand why kickboxing shoes are important to some people. Here are the the top 5 reasons. They are not ranked in any order of importance.
#1: Hyigene or OCD
Believe it or not, people like to wear shoes because they think the floor is dirty. I don’t blame them because I have a slight cleaning obsession as well. For people like us, it freak us to know we are touching something dirty with our bare skin. In these cases, I think wearing a pair of shoes make perfect sense. If you think this is weird, that is because you can’t empathize with people with OCD.
#2: Prevent blistering
For those who have been practicing kickboxing for a while, you will know what I mean. Your feet will tend to develop blisters or even crack and bleed. It is not an uncommon sight to see the floor of kickboxing shoes showing signs of blood. Maybe this makes the kickboxers feel more macho. I dunno. I think it is stupid and a good pair of kickboxing shoes will go a long way in protecting your feet from these sort of injuries and pain.
#3: Protect your feet structure
Although there was a barefoot running craze a while back, the recall of the Vibram running shoes is a stiff remainder that there has been very little conclusive evidence showing barefoot is good for our feet. In fact, there have been just as many stories about people getting injured from running barefoot. Similarly, kickboxing in barefoot might also raise the same danger for your feet if you do it continuously. Rather than taking a chance, it is better to buy a kickboxing shoe for protection. Ultimately, it is up to the individual. You know your foot best and you should sense if there is wrong when you do your barefoot kicking boxing.
#4: Better stability
This is for people who are already wearing shoes to their kickboxing workouts. Frankly wearing, a running shoe is not ideal as it makes your whole balance slightly off due to the lack of lateral support. Running shoes, on the whole, focuses on the sole of your foot. This is where a lot of R&D dollars have been spent on. However, a good pair of kickboxing shoes require more stability at the side to side movement as well as forefoot cushioning. Under these conditions, it is better to buy a cross trainer than a running shoe.
#5: Ugly feet
I save this one for the last as most guys will not even understand why this can be a reason. if that describes you, I bet you don’t know understand why women have to do pedicures right? Exactly! Women care for how their feet looks, period. If I have a pair of ugly feet, I will not be comfortable showing them naked in public. Hence, kickboxing shoes for women are important in this case purely for cosmetic reason. Guys may think it is silly but this is what women cares about.
Have I missed any reason why kickboxing shoes are necessary. If I did, let me know in the comments section. Nicole out!
